The Rack Isle
What was here
Rack Isle is a low-lying meadow surrounded by the River Colne and Arlington Mill stream. It gets its name from wooden racks that were used to stretch the drying cloth produced at Arlington Mill. Early 'Tythe' maps of 1839 tell us that the island was also grazed in the past with cattle thriving on the lush grasses in spring and summer.

What we are doing
Rack Isle was given to the National Trust in 1956 so everyone can enjoy this atrractive island that gives such picturesque setting for Arlington Row. This famous row of medieval stone cottage is probably one of the most photographed sights in Britain. Rack Isle is also an important wildlife refuge. Water plants along the banks and the wet pasture offer food and shelter for ducks, water voles and other animals. once common on our rivers, water voles are becoming scarce, and the Trust is looking after Rack Isle to make sure they flourish and increase.
