The Roman Site

You are standing on a terrace completed in 1897 when the Roman Baths opened to the public.

The swimming bath below is just one part of the Roman site, Which included extensive baths and a major temple complex built around the Hot Spring. The plan shows the parts that have been excavated and shaded area shows the parts you will see on your visit.

The modern ground level is four metres above the Roman.

The Architect and the Sculptor

George Anderson Lawson, seen here in his studio, carved the statues that overlook the Great Bath.

John McKean Brydon's design of the Roman Baths reception hall was inspired by the grand bath-houses of ancient Rome. He was a prominent Scottish architect who went on to design government buildings in Whitehall, London.

The Roman Roof

This was one of the tallest buildings in Roman Britain and the roof was 20 metres above the bath. Roman visitors would have been amazed by its high ceiling.

The Hot Spring

The hot water in the Spring rises at a rate of 1,170,000 litres each day at 46℃. It bubbles up into the King's Bath which was built in the 12th century AD.

Beneath the King's Bath is a reservoir built by Roman engineers who used the hot water to supply the baths. Today the water is at the Roman level.

The Romans also used two smaller hot springs nearby.
