Meet the Romans

People visited the Roman Baths, Sacred Spring and Temple of Sulis Minerva from around the Roman world. They came to bathe in sacred waters, seek healing and pray. Men and women, soldiers and civilians, slaves and free...

The Baths, Temple and Spring; 1st century AD

The Sacred Spring rises at the heart of the site. It was a place of veneration for local people before the Romans came. Its sacred pool is where the spirit of the Goddness dwelt and the hot waters were used by the Romans to supply the baths. They had completed the first baths and temple buildings around the Sacred Spring by 76 AD.

Dating the Baths

This is the earlist inscripton from the baths. It is from a small monument and dates to 76 AD, so the baths must have been built by then. The inscription reads '... in the 7th consulship of the Emperor Vespasian'. This was seven years after the he became Emperor in 69 AD.

The Baths, Temple and Spring; 4th Century AD

In the early 4th century AD the Baths and Temple of Sulis Minerva were at their greatest extent. In the courtyards and bathing halls there was space for hundreds of people.

The buildings were colourful and buzzed with activity.

Aquae Sulis

The Baths and Temple were the most important places in Aquae Sulis, the Roman town that later became Bath. The town is named in a Roman route map. It was also known as Aquae Calidae mening 'hot waters'.

Pre-Roman Coins

The earliest coins found here were made before the Romans arrived in Britain in 43 AD. They were made by two local tribes, the Dobunni and the Durotriges.

The coins were thrown as offerings into the Sacred Spring. They show stylised images of a ship, human head and triple tailed horses.
