Hypocaust of Heated Room

These pillars of tiles supported the floor of this room in the bath-house. Hot smoky air was drawn from a fire in the stokehole that you can see beneath the glazed floor, and circulated around the pillars. It passed through hollow flue tiles built into the walls.

 

The smoke from the charcoal fire escaped through a series of small vents in the roof.
