Suspension bridge

A suspension bridge over Ölfusá was built in 1891, encourgaged by the MP and bank manager Tryggvi Gunnarsson, which the house Tryggvaskali is named after. The bridge was then Iceland's largest construction. on September 5 in 1944, the eastern bearing cables broke. The bridge had then been 53 years in service. The bridge was raised again and used until the end of 1945. A new suspension bridge was built in 1945 and opened for traffic on December 21 that year. Its construction took only five and a half months. Its length is 84 metres (276 feet) between pillars plus a 50 m (164 feet) land bridge. The width is 8.47 metres (27.8 feet). The bridge weighs around 2150 tonnes or 4.75 million pounds
