Description of the Blue Lagoon
The wonder
The Blue Lagoon is located mid-way between two continents where the Eurasian and American tectonic plates meet, at a spot, which is closely associated with the country's active volcanic system and geothermal heat. The lava surrounding the Blue Lagoon was formed in 1226 and is called Evil lava because it is rough and difficult to cross due to its porous surface. The lava is to a great extent covered with fraile moss which should be handled with care.
The Blue Lagoon geothermal seawater is a part of an ecocycle where nature and science work in harmony. The seawater originate 2000 m/6562 ft beneath the ground where it is heated by earth's natural forces. At this depth, the temperature is 240 C/ 464 F and the pressure is 36 times the pressure on the earth's surface. The geothermal seawater is a result of the sea coming into contact with magmatic intrusions, assimilating minerals from the earth, which combine to give the lagoon its active ingredients and well known heating power. The lagoon holds six million liters of water, all of which is renewed within 40 hours. The geothermal seawater has as self-cleansing effect and regular sampling shows that "common" bacteria don ot thrive in this special ecosystem. Thus additional cleansers such as chlorine are not needed.
The active ingredients found iin the seawater; minerals, silica and algae, have been praised for their benefits on healty skin and for their effectiveness against skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis.
The service
The Blue Lagoon aims to provide energey for life through forces of nature. Guests bathe in the natural geothermal seawater known for healing power and active ingredients. In addition to relaxing in the lagoon, guests have access to steambaths and sauna, in-water massage and spa treatments. Refreshments are available at the Lagoon Bar and Blue Cafe and restaurant LAVA offers an a la carte menui. Blue Lagoon skin care products, based on the active ingredients, are available at the Blue Lagoon shop.
As the holder of the Blue Flag, Blue Lagoon fulfills the criteria through:
environmental information and education, envirinmental management, safety and service and water quality.
Environmental information and education
The origin of the Blue Lagoon is at a depth 2000m and its geological history is the foundation of the concept of the entire operation. Knowledge and understanding of the natural environment is crucial for employees and business associates alike. Blue Lagoon offers the following presentations and educational programs:
a. Detailed information on the Blue Lagoon in brochures, magazines and tourist guides, signs and posters located at the premises and on our website.
b. Presentations to business associates, local communities and other guests.
c. The Blue Lagoon science cafe, which are monthly presentations given on such varied subjects as: DNA-mapping of the geothermal seawater, The Blud Lagoon psoriasis treatment and its effectiveness and mapping of CO2 footprints.
d. Educational program for all new employees.
Environmental management
Blue Lagoon is an innovative company in health, wellness and skin care. Its operation is powered 100% by Iceland's clean geothermal energy - an increasingly important element in today's world. The Blue Lagoon management teams protects the environment in many ways by:
a. Being a part of the Svartsengi / Reykjanes Resource Park, a world unique concept based on sustainable development.
b. Using green production methods in harvesting the naturatl and unique Blue Lagoon active ingredients.
c. Protecting the environment and making the facilities harmonize with the natural surroundings. All excess can struction material, such as lava, is used for decoration, walls or wind breakers.
d. Participating in environmental education with the Icelandic Travel Industry Association.
Safety and Services
The Blue Lagoon has established and prctices a detailed emergency plan. All employees are informed, briefed and trained in accordance to the plan. Lifeguards patrol the bathing area and first-aid and lifesaving equipments is within reach. Blue Lagoon is also a part of a regional emergency plan to cope with possible pollution accidents.
Water Quality
The quality of the Blue Lagoon geothermal seawater is monitored regulary and samples sent to an independent and officially authorised laboratory.

The quality of the Blue Lagoon geothermal seawater is monitored regularly and samples sent to an independent and officially authorised laboratory.
Blue Flag beach means that a number of requirements regarding bathing water quality, cleaning of the beach, toilets, safety, information and environment activities are fulfilled. It also means that the bathing water is continuously monitored for the three different types of bacteria shown in the tables. The bathing water is monitored at least every fortnight throughout the season. In the table you can see when the water has been analyzed and how many bacteria were found.
If the results do not meet with the requirements the Blue Flag must be taken down.

Walking paths in the area
The Blue Lagoon's geothermal seawater is born 2000 meters within the earth where ocean water and freshwater converge in a volcanic frontier of searing heat and immense pressure.
The beneficial powers of the Blue Lagoon were first discovered by a man seeking comfort from psoriasis.
The vast lava plain surrounding the Blue Lagoon dates from the year 1226.
