Where the central aisle and transepts intersect, there hangs a breathtaking circular painting on canvas (diameter: 580 cm), 43 meters above the ground in the so-called crossing-tower of the Cathedral. It portrays Mary, who, encircled by a swirling multitude of angels and cherubs, rises toward heaven in a radiant light. In just a few moments she will be with God the Father and God the Son, who, it is true, are only visible to Cathedral visitors with a telescope and who together hold the crown they will place upon her head. The Holy Ghost, the third member of the Holy Trinity, also waits for Mary in the form of a dove.
The Antwerp artist Cornelis Schut (1597-1655) completed this work in 1647. Along with his sublime use of light and dark, the perspective is also worthy of note. Basing himself on Italian baroque vault and cupola painting, Schut reproduced the assumption from the point of view of people standing on the ground. The painting extends the crossing tower to infinity, as it were, and provides the viewer with the overwhelming sensation of looking straight up into heaven.
