This is an unusually long block and was placed directly over the approach to the doorway leading into the temple. In this prominent position. Athena, goddess of the temple, was shown seated on the right, and her father Zeus was enthroned on the left

East frieze V

The east frieze

The east frieze brings together two arms of a procession that were shown on the other three sides of the Parthenon.

The Peplos

The people was a robe renewed every four years, when it was taken by the procession of the Great Panathenaic Festival and dedicated to an statue of Athena on the Acropolis. The robe was woven with scenes of a mythical battle between the gods and giants. Weaving began nine months before the Panathenaia at another festival, the Chalkeia. Two girls, appointed to serve Athena, the arrephoroi, set the warp up on the loom.

Hermes, a messenger god, sits looking in the direction of the procession. He wears sandals, and a traveller's hat (petasos) rests on his knee. The figure who leans on his shoulder is probably Dionysos, god of wine. His left arm was supported by a staff (thyrsos)

East freize IV 24-25

Demeter, goddess of growing corn, was shown resting her chin (now missing) upon her hand. In Greek art this was a conventional gesture of mourning. Her grief is for her daughter Persephone, who was abducted by the god of the Underworld. In her left hand Demeter holds a torch, symbol of the Eleusinian Mysteries, of which she was the patron deity.

East frieze IV. 26

Ares, god of war, sits with one knee cradled in his hand, while his left foot rests on the shaft of a spear. Part of the weapon is just visible below the ankle bone. The rest of it must have been painted on the stone

Six men stand between the girls and the gods. They may be compared with figqure 43-46 on the other side of the gods. These ten may be the eponymous heroes of the ten tribes of Athens. Alternatively, they are civic dignitaries of some kind.

The north frieze begins with a preparation scene reminiscent of those on the west. A boy helps a rider to adjust the length of his tunic, while another horseman waits in readiness. As this man restrains his horse, he looks back at his unprepared comrade. His raised arm recalls the gesture of figure 2 of the west frieze.
